Returning again to volunteer with Koebitai 6年ぶりのこえび隊活動
Hi! I’m Takara coming from the US. This spring, I came back to Setouchi Islands for my second time participating in Koebi activities! I made sure to hit Takamatsu as a destination during my post-college graduation trip all over Japan because of the wonderful memories I made here when I volunteered as a high schooler. Before, I think I volunteered for 6 weeks or more, but this time I could only stay for 1 week which flew by so fast!
こんにちは、アメリカ在住のタカラです！この春、６年振りにこえびボランティアに戻ってきました！
高校１年の時にここで体験させてもらったたくさんの素晴らしい思い出が、大学卒業旅行一人旅の最後の目的地として高松に私を引き寄せました。
当時は6週間以上もボランティア活動ができたのですが、残念ながら今回は1週間しか滞在できないので、こえび寮がオープンするや否や直ぐ高松に飛びました！
Arriving at the office on my first evening, I felt nervous before opening the door which I hadn’t touched for 6 years, but was immediately welcomed by familiar faces. To new staff members, I was introduced through crazy funny stories about my last Koebi experience. I was laughing until stomach hurt, and made new friends as if I had known them forever – it was like no time had passed at all!
夕方、こえびオフィスに辿り着き、6年ぶりに開けるドアを押す私の手が緊張しているのがわかりました。
次の瞬間、懐かしい仲間の顔が目に飛び込むと同時に、みんなが私を歓迎してくれました。
そして初対面の新しいスタッフには、私が６年前にしでかした失敗談や面白いエピソードが紹介されてしまいました。私はお腹がよじれるほど笑って、まるでずっと昔から知ってる親友のような、過去の時間を飛び越えてきたかのような友達が新しくできました！
Throughout the week, I was able to participate in various activities including spending a day in the office making colorful cards and chatting with new Koebi staff and members, working with the artist to clean out old homes to make space for an installation, and throwing a birthday celebration for the local residents of the island.
一週間、私はいろんな活動に参加することができました。
新しいこえびのスタッフやボランティアメンバーとお喋りしながら、オフィスで一日中、カラフルなカードを作って過ごしたり、アーティストと古い家屋を掃除してインスタレーションのためのスペースを作ったり、島の住民のためにみんなで誕生日のお祝いをしたり．．．。
Here we spent a day sitting alongside local fishermen to make fishing nets that would be tied together to create a piece. It was really great to learn a new skill and even getting into flow state for a few hours. During our break we walked around an area which seemed like a fishing port. It’s not hard to see how creative people could gather inspiration from the colors and textures of these materials.
私たちは、地元の漁師と一緒に座って漁網を作り、それをつなぎ合わせて作品を作る、という日がありました。新しいスキルを習得したうえ、数時間作業に没頭して無心になれたことは本当に素晴らしいことでした。 休憩時間に私たちは漁港の辺りを歩きました。 クリエイティブな人々が、このような漁網の素材の色やテクスチュアからインスピレーションを得ることができるかどうかを見分けるのは難しくありません。（誰もが創造力を掻き立てられるでしょう！）
As we work we had a spectacular view, the sound of the waves, sea breeze, spring blossoms, and the relaxed atmosphere of the Setouchi islands.
私たちは作業中も、壮観な眺め、波の音、潮風、春の花、そして瀬戸内の島々のゆったりとした時のうつろいを感じていました。
We shared yummy tonjiru and mugwort tempura for our lunch break!
ランチに最高に美味しい豚汁とよもぎの天ぷらをみんなで食べたよ！
I had so much fun on my last day! (The karashi mustard was too spicy for Yamamoto-san.)
私のボランティア最終日はめっちゃ楽しかった！（山本さんには辛すぎたマスタード。。。）
After working, we had time to explore the area, which has lots of nice bookshops, zakka-ya, and cute retro vestiges.
作業終了後は、私たちにとって町探索の時間。素敵なブックストア、雑貨屋さん、かわいいレトロな面影が町にはたくさん！
On my day off, I took a short bike ride to visit Ritsurin-koen, which was exquisitely beautiful and surprisingly a pretty big park! The tea house in the middle of the pond was the best part, where I sat for a long time.
お休みの日、ちょっと自転車に乗って栗林公園に行ってみました。
栗林公園はとても美しくて、驚くほど広い公園でした！ 池の真ん中にある茶室は、長時間座って落ち着くことができた最高の場所でした。
The Koebi dorm is one of the most fun places I’ve stayed. Back at the dorm, we made fresh spring rolls, pork shabu shabu, okonomiyaki, gyoza, somen, and morning coffee nearly every day together. You can always sit at the table and eat and meet new people and hear their backgrounds and stories. Koebi staff sometimes came to hang out with us too. Thank you Mitchy and Saki-chan for the best hospitality, inspiring stories, and being super lively and friendly!
こえび寮は、私の泊まった宿泊施設の中で一番楽しい場所です。 寮に戻ると、生春巻き、豚しゃぶ、お好み焼き、餃子、そうめん、そして朝にはコーヒーを、ほぼ毎日一緒に作りました。
だれもがいつでもテーブルに来ることができ、食事をし、新しい人と出会い、それぞれの過去や未来のストーリーを聞くことができます。 そしてこえびスタッフも時々私たちに加わります。
ミッチーとサキちゃん、最高のおもてなし、感動的なお話、そしていつもスーパー元気＆フレンドリーでいてくれてありがとう！

This is the view of the islands and the inland sea from Takamatsu port as we saw every day. For me, it’s a comforting scene of a familiar place full of happy memories, inspiring people, and meaningful volunteer work. It’s been gratifying to see some of the pieces that I contributed to show up in posters for the Setouchi art festival. During my short week here, I learned new hand skills, new Japanese words, and connected with a community that even while I live abroad, will still be here, and can reconnect again when I return for the next festival.
この風景が、私たちが毎日見てきた島々と高松港から臨む瀬戸内海です。
私にとっては、幸せな思い出、感動的な人々、そして有意義なボランティア活動がたくさん詰まった親しみのある場所の心地よい風景です。
私がボランティアアート活動した作品のいくつかは、瀬戸内国際芸術祭のポスターの中にも見ることができるのはとても嬉しいです。
こえび隊でのこの短い滞在の間に、私は新しいスキルや新しい日本語を学ぶことができ、海外に住んでいてもこえびコミュニティーと繋がりを取り戻すことができました。次の芸術祭に戻ってきたとき、私はまたここにいるでしょう。そして再び仲間やコミュニティーと繋がることがきっとできるでしょう。
