The Grand Festivals of Megijima and Ogijima take place around this time of August in alternate years. It was Ogijima’s turn this year, the first time in six years that the float and mikoshi (portable shrine) were brought out. The Koebi-tai was also invited to participate.

We boarded the first ferry in the morning and headed for the venue: Toyotama-hime Shrine. When it was time, people from the island and outside gathered and started preparing for the Shinto ritual. Ather the ritual, a lion dance was performed.

After that, the mikoshi was brought to the front of the worship hall. Visitors lined up, and passed through under the mikoshi. It is said that if you go through under the mikoshi, you will have good luck and get rid of misfortune for the year.

Then, it was time for the float!
Ther float of Ogijima is splendidly decorated with flowers and chenille stems. It paraded with children beating drums and ringing bells, and adults playing the shamisen inside.

In the midst of the float parade, there were improvised performances known as niwaka. Members from Koebi-tai and the Setouchi Triennale Executive Committee participated in a niwaka performance.

Apart from ours, teachers from Ogijima Elementary and Junior High School performed “Ogijima Folk Songs.” Everyone there joined in the chorus♪

The Grand Festival, held for the first time in six years, came to a cheerful and dazzling end.
